If you have been retired for a while, you probably remember the sweet smell of freedom on your first “day off.” When you first retire, free time is a novelty that might motivate you to seize the day and engage in all your favorite pastimes and hobbies. However, if you are several years into retirement, you might find yourself running out of things to keep yourself busy, or you may even notice a lack of energy or desire to partake in interests and hobbies that you once loved. Maybe you begin to feel a little lonely without seeing all of your coworkers each day, and interacting with clients and customers. When you find yourself with less energy and motivation, you have to remember the importance of senior health. The best ways to stay healthy as a senior are to exercise, eat nutritiously, and be social. Here are some tips to ensure that you are making the most out of your retirement as a healthy senior.

  1. Be Active

For retired seniors, it can be so easy to plop down on the couch, turn on the television, and sink into your favorite soap opera. However, maintaining a level of activity is vital for your health. Exercise is an important component of not only weight management, but also keeping up positive mental health. You don’t need to run a marathon, or ride a bike cross-town! Try going for a leisurely walk around your neighborhood for 20 minutes each day. If you have a dog, take him with you instead of letting him out into the backyard! A short walk through the park can also be a great time to catch up with a friend. You’ll instantly feel better from the fresh air, companionship, and boost in endorphins.

  1. Eat Nutritiously

If you’re living alone, or are feeling a lack of energy as a senior, it might be challenging to cook yourself a full, healthy meal. How easy is it to just pull a box out of the freezer, pop it in the microwave and push a couple buttons? Done in minutes! Eating nutritiously doesn’t necessarily mean making three full gourmet meals each day. Mindfully adding vegetables, fruits, and whole grains to each meal, and remembering to eat regularly, can make a world of difference for senior health.

  1. Be Social

Are you a senior living alone? Does your partner or family work full time, while you stay at home? You may find yourself feeling lonely some days, or like you don’t have anyone to talk to. It’s important to stay connected with people, as sharing ideas and feelings with others will greatly improve your emotional and mental health. One way to be social is to seek out activities in your community – maybe your neighborhood hosts a monthly book club, or maybe there’s a group that shares your interest in bird-watching. Think about what interests you. Chances are, there are others in your town who would love to do it with you. Companionship is important for seniors to stay happy and healthy.

If you still find it difficult to be active, eat nutritiously, and be social, it may be time to look for help. A great source for help and caregiving are other seniors!
