Questions are on the rise regarding the safety of providing carbon canister protective breathing devices with a blower device to help personnel breathe easier. This extra attachment, as per the Dutch study, may pose threat to a persons life.
Marco Linders and colleagues at The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research have thrown some light on this matter.
They opined that:
such respiratory protective devices traditionally are operated by human lungs. The inhale-exhale cycle results in a pulsating pattern of air flow over the activated carbon filter material that absorbs toxic gases, preventing inhalation by military, safety, security and other personnel.
The hazardous inhalation of the toxic gases may immediately effect a war stricken personnel and could malign his depleting health. The scientists add that by attaching a blower device, a constant power assisted airflow is created over the activated carbon. The carbon acts as a constant filter and readily adsorbs the harmful gases. But as the concentration of contaminant material increases on the carbon film so does the risk factor. A constant airflow through the blower inturn increases the flow of contaminants thus cutting off the oxygen supply to the outgoing hose .
Now the question arises- Does this study really proves something? If it does then its high time for the medicos to come up with an alternative Life Support System.
