While we have seen Pupil and the Intelligent wheelchair earlier to ease the physically disabled and the patients, the Engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are working on a robotic system that will enable the wheelchair dependent patients to move independently without someone’s assistance.

The system that is dubbed “HLPR Chair” (for Home Lift, Position and Rehabilitation) will also lessen the injuries to the caretakers and the patients. The system developed for the patients with a weight upto 300 pounds allows the stroke patients to move their legs actively without supporting their entire body weight.

Well, the patient can move very easily as the HLPR chair moves at a pace of mere 27 inches per second (0.7m/s).
