Schering AG, Germany and Avid Radiopharmaceuticals Inc., Philadelphia, under a joint venture, are working on the development of Novel Diagnostic imaging Agents for Alzheimer’s disease. The agreement says that Avid has the option for the commercialization of such compounds for use with PET scanning technology.

The compounds made by Avid directly bind to the amyloid plaques in the brain thought to cause Alzheimer’s disease. They can be used with a variety of common, non-invasive imaging technologies such as positron emission tomography (PET) scanning.

Daniel Skovronsky, M.D., Ph.D., President and C.E.O. of Avid Radiopharmaceuticals said:

This collaboration validates our novel approach for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and provides us with additional resources to develop our broad pipeline of molecular imaging pharmaceuticals.

As estimated, the number of patients affected from alzheimer’s disease is going to cross 81.1 million. If the project is a success, it would surely benefit numerous patients ailing from alzheimer’s disease.
